Q: When will ActiveCaptain work on my phone (iPhone, Blackberry/Storm, Android/Droid, Pre, etc).
A: ActiveCaptain's main goal is to have as many people as possible using and updating the data. Therefore, it is important for us to support as many platforms as possible. It takes time to develop support for each platform and we have to prioritize our schedule based on the number of people we believe we will be using the new software. Our current schedule is: (a) Finish X Preview, (b) Create standalone versions of the web site for Windows and Macintosh as applications, (c) Create an iPhone version, (d) Create a Blackberry version, (e) Create an Android/Droid/Pre version.
Q: There is data that is incorrect for a marina or anchorage (location, fuel price, restaurant, etc).
A: The ActiveCaptain database contains millions of data items. As anyone who has used a traditional guidebook knows, phone numbers, amenities, and other information changes, marinas close while new ones open, and new anchorages are discovered. So naturally from time to time you will find information that is incorrect or missing. The power of the ActiveCaptain community is that each user brings their unique experiences and local knowledge to the website. We encourage you to share your knowledge by correcting and enhancing this tool by editing the data and adding your reviews. No one person or one company can keep all of this data up to date throughout the world (or even in one area). It all relies on the community to keep the data current. There is help on how to update the data. And you gain points and win awards and products by making updates!
Q: My account says that it is pending. Can you fix it?
A: Yes! Please leave a comment with the email address that you used to create the account. The validation email was sent to you but has ended up in a spam or junk folder. You really need to find it and tell your email system that "This is not Spam". Otherwise you won't receive emails offering free products for your ActiveCaptain points!
Q: I have forgotten my password, or when I try to login it says I already have an account. How can I retrieve my password?
A: To access your account, select login from the upper right-hand corner and then select Lost password. Enter the email address you are using and your password will be sent to you.
Q: When I access details for a marker, it says that Flash is out of memory.
A: This is sometimes a problem with older computers or ones with less internal memory. The ActiveCaptain guidebook is much more of an application than a web site and uses a lot of computer resources. It seems to happen more with Microsoft's Internet Explorer which is widely used but very buggy. The things to try are: (a) Restart your browser, (b) Restart your computer and don't run as many applications at the same time, (c) Try using a different computer.
Q: I changed data for a marker (position, name, deleted, etc) but the old data is still showing.
First, thank you for your updates. That is the lifeblood of ActiveCaptain. When you make an update, it gets flagged and displayed in the bottom of the details window - scroll down and you'll see it. We review every update to verify and validate them. Once we do this, the data becomes part of the official marker data and you get awarded points. We average more than 1,000 updates every day and get most of them reviewed within 24 hours.
