ActiveCaptain Website Adds "Local Knowledge" Markers, Logs 3,000 Registered Users, 10,000 Marinas and Over 50,000 Updates
ActiveCaptain, the wiki-style, visual database for mariners, attracts thousands of users to its free website as its store of marinas, anchorages, reviews and now local knowledge continues to grow. In only six short months ActiveCaptain has become a top source for cruisers looking for valuable information about their waterways.
CASTINE, Maine, July 10, 2007 - The thousands of miles logged by ActiveCaptain founders, Jeffrey and Karen Siegel on aCappella have given them an understanding of the valuable information available in the cruising community. Safety, security and greater enjoyment are found when they take advantage of the experience and knowledge of others. Since starting ActiveCaptain, they have been able to help others share information about marinas and anchorages. Now the ActiveCaptain community can easily share their "local knowledge."
Local Knowledge is that unique brand of information that comes from cruisers who are intimately familiar with a given area. It can simply enhance the cruising experience, by recommending a great restaurant or the best place to swim, or can offer added safety by warning of an unmarked shoal or hazardous tidal area.
The first release of Local Knowledge markers supports Navigational items (bridges, dams, locks and ferries). With over 1,000 local knowledge entries already loaded, ActiveCaptain users can look up the navigational challenges that are in their path while adding their own local knowledge to the ActiveCaptain database. Future Local Knowledge markers will include hazards, attractions, boat ramps, services, West Marine locations, etc. A total of more than 30 different categories of information.
ActiveCaptain's wiki-style database (www.activecaptain.com) allows users to make additions, changes, and deletions to the information. Markers are drawn on maps and satellite images to visually identify them. Once selected, information about that marker is displayed. There is also an extensive capability for reviewing and rating facilities, anchorages or destinations.
ActiveCaptain is about sharing knowledge among the community of cruisers. Access is free for anyone. The framework allows all members of the cruising community to share their knowledge and experience.
