ActiveCaptain Tops 100,000 Updates
ActiveCaptain Exceeds 100,000 User Updates, Approaches 5,000 Users, Tops
10,000 Marinas
CASTINE, Maine, Nov. 29, 2007 - In just ten short months ActiveCaptain's free
website (www.activecaptain.com)
has received over 100,000 user contributions
from its nearly 5,000 registered users. The ActiveCaptain database now has
over 10,000 marinas, well over 3,000 reviews, 1,000 anchorages and over
11,000 local knowledge items.
100,000 updates in ten months is over 300 per day. New anchorages, current
fuel prices, marina information, local knowledge -- updated more than 300
times a day. And the information keeps coming in at an increasing rate. This
amazing accomplishment highlights the power of bringing together a community
of like-minded individuals by providing an easy way to share information.
ActiveCaptain is a place where the cruising community can find marinas,
anchorages, and local knowledge visually on worldwide maps. The wiki-style
database allows users to make additions, changes, and deletions to the
information. Markers are drawn on maps and satellite images to visually
identify them. Once selected, information about that marker is displayed.
There is also an extensive capability for reviewing and rating facilities,
anchorages or destinations.
"We are not aware of another place where cruisers can gain access to so much
information in such a usable way," comments Jeffrey Siegel, President of
Active Corporation. "Today's cruiser is no longer dependent on stagnant
information -- waiting for the next printing of their cruising guide, which
is outdated the moment it's available. Our users participate in a meaningful
way to ensure they have the best information possible. I think the numbers
prove that it's working."
ActiveCaptain continues to provide the cruising community with access to the
information they need. The next addition will be adding more than 3,000
inlets. And early next year ActiveCaptain Mobile will be released for mobile
phones. It will display real NOAA charts with ActiveCaptain's marinas,
anchorages, and local knowledge markers. For a preview visit

ActiveCaptain is about sharing knowledge among the community of cruisers.
Access is free for anyone. The framework allows all members of the cruising
community to share their knowledge and experience. It depends on cruisers
helping cruisers.
