ActiveCaptain Adds Largest Update To Date: 3,000 Inlets. Becomes An Online Electronic Guidebook

ActiveCaptain's latest addition of over 3,000 inlets plus its 10,000 marinas, 150,000 user updates, 15,000 local knowledge items, 4,000 reviews and 2,000 anchorages make it a powerful electronic cruising guidebook.

CASTINE, Maine, Jan. 21, 2008 - ActiveCaptain (www.activecaptain.com) adds the largest group of Local Knowledge markers to date. Over 3,000 inlet markers throughout the US, its territories, and along parts of Canada. Inlets are special markers that include major ocean entrances, harbors (large and small), rivers, coves, passages and channels. Most of the markers include descriptions of the inlet approach, hazards to be aware of, tide and current information, general harbor guidelines, and much more. These new markers add general guidebook information and compliment the huge database of marinas, anchorages, boat ramps, and other existing information.

As ActiveCaptain reaches its one year mark, the boating community continues to support this free, wiki-style database. With well over 5,000 registered users from around the world, ActiveCaptain's visual database offers boaters of all types a place to find and share information. The information is supplied by fellow boaters; no hype, no advertising, just honest information and opinions from fellow boaters.

"We believe the success of ActiveCaptain is due to its simple, yet interesting interface, and its wiki-style access," states Jeffrey Siegel, cofounder of ActiveCaptain. "Users can share and find real information by browsing through maps and satellite images. And the addition of thousands of inlets moves ActiveCaptain beyond a basic marina search database, making it a true electronic guidebook. We can now look beyond the traditional guidebook - out of date before the printing is done - and turn to each other for information, opinions and guidance."

ActiveCaptain shows the power of bringing together a community of like-minded individuals by providing an easy way to share information. The database allows users to find marinas, anchorages, and local knowledge visually on worldwide maps and satellite images, and make additions, changes, and deletions to the information. There is also an extensive capability for reviewing and rating facilities and anchorages.

ActiveCaptain continues to provide the cruising community with access to the information they need. ActiveCaptain Mobile for mobile phones is currently in beta testing. It will display real NOAA charts with ActiveCaptain's marinas, anchorages, and local knowledge markers. For a preview visit www.activemap.com to see some sample screen shots.

ActiveCaptain is about sharing knowledge among the community of cruisers. Access is free for anyone. The framework allows all members of the cruising community to share their knowledge and experience. It depends on cruisers helping cruisers.
